Alcohol Awareness Month Observed Throughout April - Public Engagement Sessions Underway at DNDC

The Ministry of National Security, through the Department for National Drug Control (DNDC), advises the public that April is being observed as Alcohol Awareness Month, under the theme: “Hope and Happy Opportunities.”
Alcohol Awareness Month was first established in 1987 by the US-based National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD), with the goal of increasing public understanding of alcohol-related issues and reducing stigma.
This annual campaign continues to serve as a platform for promoting open dialogue, prevention strategies, and healthier lifestyle choices.
In recognition of the initiative, the DNDC has partnered with CADA and SHIFT (formerly known as PRIDE Bermuda) to host a series of weekly public information sessions every Friday throughout April.
These sessions are held at the DNDC headquarters at Melbourne House, 11 Parliament Street, Hamilton, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The first session took place last Friday, with additional events scheduled for the remaining weeks in April.
Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Weeks, JP, MP, emphasised the need for awareness and community involvement, stating that alcohol misuse continues to pose a serious public safety issue in Bermuda.
“Too many of our road traffic fatalities involve alcohol,” Minister Weeks said. “This campaign is about more than information — it’s about prevention. It’s about saving lives and creating a culture of personal responsibility and healthier choices.”
Minister Weeks added, “By reaching out to the public, especially our youth, we are reinforcing the message that their decisions matter. We’re equipping families, educators, and individuals with the tools they need to support safer communities.”
The DNDC highlights that alcohol remains the most readily available and commonly used substance in Bermuda, with rising concern over its impact on adolescents, families, and community health.
The department is encouraging open conversations, strong support systems, and access to helpful resources as part of its wider prevention efforts.
Each Friday session will focus on the following four key areas:
· Zero Blood Alcohol Content (BAC): A crucial initiative promoting sober driving and riding to enhance road safety.
· Youth and Alcohol Use: A review of middle and senior school data that underscores the dangers of underage drinking.
· Alcohol and Cancer: Raising awareness of the connection between alcohol consumption and cancer risk — a global health concern.
· Health Warnings on Labels: Advocating for clear warning labels on alcohol products so that consumers can make more informed choices.
A DNDC spokesperson reiterated the importance of timely action, noting: “The need for prevention is now. By helping the public connect the dots — from early intervention to recovery — we’re laying the foundation for a healthier and more resilient Bermuda.”
Members of the public are encouraged to stop by the upcoming information booths and join the national conversation about responsible alcohol use during Alcohol Awareness Month — and beyond.
