Celebrate the 2024 Bermuda Gombey Festival at the Botanical Gardens!
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport is pleased to announce that one of Bermuda’s most electrifying cultural traditions is back.
The 2024 Bermuda Gombey Festival will take place on Saturday, October 26th, at the Botanical Gardens, and the Department of Culture invites everyone to join in this year’s celebration of Gombey Unity. The annual Bermuda Gombey Festival is a family-friendly event that celebrates the island's rich Gombey heritage, showcasing the talents of local Gombey troupes through mesmerizing dance, music, and costumes. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a first-time attendee, this is your chance to experience one of Bermuda's most iconic cultural displays.
Special features of the festival include live Performances of Gombey troupes from across Bermuda, who will take to the stage and bring the rhythms and energy that defines this beloved art form. There will also be a community art project called “Gombeys in the Gardens” with The Chewstick Foundation. Everyone is welcome to join in painting and celebrating Bermuda's culture through art.
The Department of Culture will be honouring Gombey Leaders. This year’s Gombey Festival will pay tribute to three significant figures, Robert Wilson of Gombey Evolution Troupe who is recognized this year as the festival was cancelled in 2023 due to rain. Additionally, 2024 honourees include Dennis Parsons of Places Gombeys, and posthumously, Lawrence “Stickers” Hendrickson Jr. and Carolyn “Granny” Hendrickson of H&H Gombeys.
As part of the Gombey Festival Weekend, the Department of Culture will host exciting events including:
- Virtual Launch of the Gombey Unity Documentary on Friday, October 25th. (Details: www.culture.bm)
- Chewstick Neo Griot Open Mic Jam Session on Sunday, October 27th. (Details: www.culture.bm)
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, The Hon. Owen Darrell, shared his enthusiasm for this year’s festival, stating, "The Gombey Festival is a powerful expression of our history, rebellion, and freedom. I encourage everyone to come out, celebrate the Gombey tradition, and show their national pride. Let’s honour our Gombey captains, troupes, and the incredible legacy they carry forward for future generations."
The Department of Culture is excited to continue its commitment to preserving and celebrating the Gombey tradition. For more information on the festival and related events, visit www.culture.bm.
