All seeds for propagation entering Bermuda are regulated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Some seeds are prohibited entry due to pests and diseases, while some are regulated and require an Import Permit for entry.  Please contact the DENR at plants@gov.bm for information on seeds and what is required for their entry.  Seeds for animal or human consumption are not regulated under this policy. 

The following seeds are prohibited entry:

• Musaceae
• Palmae/Arecaecae
• Citrus
• Rooted/sprouted seeds
• Seeds contaminated with soil
• Any species which is known to be invasive or shows invasive tendencies
• Genetically modified seeds
• Seeds treated with pesticides (commercial farmers are permitted to import seeds treated with pesticides, provided application is made in advance of the shipment). 

Note: Seed potato or tubers for planting are plant material and are not seeds.  Please refer to the 'Importation of Plant Material' document for more information.

How to import seeds into Bermuda

Contact the Plant Protection Lab with the scientific name of the seed you wish to import prior to placing your order. Seeds must be ordered from a commercial seed producer in order to ensure accurate labelling and freedom from potential pests or diseases.

The Plant Protection Lab will review your information and respond via email or letter. Approved seeds can be imported into Bermuda. Then, keep in mind that:

• All seeds must be clearly labeled by the grower/supplier.
• An invoice must accompany your shipment.
• Seeds must be free from all fruit flesh/pulp, pests, and diseases. Seeds that require moisture to retain viability must be packaged in sterile/previously unused paper, vermiculite, or commercially processed coconut coir. Seeds which are sprouted and have roots will not be permitted entry. Soil and moss are prohibited and must not be used.

Customs will detain the seed shipment upon arrival for inspection. Seeds not meeting the entry requirements outlined above, or found to be infested with pests, diseases, or contaminated with soil will be confiscated and destroyed. Seeds meeting the entry requirements will be released to you.
