Flu viruses are always changing. Each year’s flu vaccine is made to protect against three or four viruses that are likely to cause disease that year. This year the flu vaccine is made with four viruses. Flu vaccine cannot prevent all cases of flu, but it is the best defense against the disease. The Department of Health in Bermuda uses “inactivated” vaccines which do not contain any live influenza virus and therefore cannot cause flu infection. Protection from the vaccine begins within two weeks of administration and lasts several months to a year.
Can the flu vaccine be given at the same time with the Covid-19 vaccine?
Yes, both the flu vaccine and the Covid-19 vaccine can be safely given at the same time. If you have concerns about getting both vaccines at the same time; you should speak with your healthcare provider.
Are there any side effects or risks of the vaccine?
With a vaccine, like any medicine, there is a chance of side effects. These are usually mild and go away on their own. Flu vaccines are considered safe and relatively free from side effects. Most people have no side effects but a few may have redness or tenderness at the injection site. Persons are encouraged to rest on the day of vaccination and the day after. Occasional allergic reactions have been reported and the rare possibility of severe potentially life threatening reactions or neurological complications, exists. Any unusual reaction should be reported to a physician.
If you have an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing or face swelling, contact your doctor immediately or call 911.
