On Friday, 26 April, The Registry General joined international partners in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day. World IP Day 2024 is an opportunity to explore how intellectual property (IP) encourages the growth of creative solutions crucial to building our shared future.
IP rights are protected by law to ensure the appropriate recognition and financial benefit is given to the creators of new, ground-breaking products; however, our challenges are deep-seated and complex. Therefore, we must strive to meet critical principles that align with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The Registry General's Department focused on the first three SDG goals of ‘No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health, and Well-Being.’
What exactly are the SDG goals? The 17 SDGs are a blueprint for countries to balance social, economic, and environmental actions to marry ingenuity and intellectual property to achieve a sustainable future for everyone, everywhere.
An example of IP merging with two SDGs goals is a patented product in development in the United Kingdom called Milky Plant. This food processor extracts liquid from plant-based foods such as grains, cereals, legumes, and nuts to produce plant-based milk. It was created by inventors Michale Adjovi and Nadina Grigoras in response to the rising demand for alternative products to dairy milk due to health and environmental concerns.
During the week of 22 April to 26 April, the Department carried out initiatives that highlighted the significance of these three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On Tuesday, 23 April, the Department's staff undertook a day of fasting.
On Friday, 26 April, staff concluded the observations by presenting a food hamper to local charity, The Eliza Dolittle Society, and donating to the Christ Church Feeding program.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs, The Hon. Walter Roban, JP, MP welcomed the observations for World IP Day 2024 stating, “Intellectual property rights and laws are the linchpin to a prosperous future that supports the world's most innovative designers and their solutions to the most pressing challenges such as, climate change, poverty, and food insecurity.
“I encourage you to learn more about Intellectual Property laws that protect your ideas before they are fully realised to foster a healthy, sustainable island home.”
