Carifesta 3

The Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, is currently in Barbados attending CARIFESTA XV, where Bermuda is proudly represented among the region’s artistic and cultural community. While overseas, the Minister has shared the following statement:

“Bermuda has proudly brought an 18-member delegation to Barbados to participate in CARIFESTA XV, the region’s premier celebration of arts and culture. Our contingent of Bermudian creatives is representing the Island across a wide range of disciplines, including dance, music, visual arts, film, and thought leadership.

“Over the past few days, I have had the privilege of watching Bermuda’s artists showcase their immense talent on some of the Caribbean’s biggest stages. From the vibrant parade through the streets of Bridgetown to the spectacular opening ceremony that united nations from across the region, Bermuda’s presence has been both celebrated and warmly received.

“I was especially proud to see Bermudian performers Aalai and Fire Wayne light up the stage at the Super Soca Concert with the Darien Bailey Band. Sharing the bill alongside soca legends such as RPB, Biggie Irie, Skinny Fabulous, and Machel Montano, their performance proved that Bermuda’s music stands tall among the region’s finest.

“Another highlight was Bermuda Night at Golden Square Freedom Park, which featured outstanding performances by Fire Wayne, Aalai, Joy T. Barnum, Kyra-Jaye, and our beloved Bermuda Gombeys. The evening was a true showcase of Bermudian talent. The spirit of CARIFESTA shone brightly as Trinidad opened the programme, setting the stage for Bermuda to take the spotlight before an electrified and welcoming audience.

“Equally special has been the opportunity for our Bermuda Gombeys to connect with other Caribbean masqueraders and drummers in a cultural exchange that embodies the spirit of “One Caribbean.” These shared moments of rhythm, dance, and tradition reflect the deep cultural ties that unite us across the region.

“I was also delighted to watch one of Bermuda’s most talented visual artists, Gherdai Hassell, speak about her artistic process in a fascinating panel discussion. Her insights and creativity captured the imagination of all present and reflected the strength of Bermuda’s contribution to the visual arts.

“With several events still to come, I am confident that Bermuda will continue to shine brightly at CARIFESTA XV. This delegation is not only sharing our Island’s creativity with the region but also strengthening the bonds that connect Bermuda to the wider Caribbean family.”
