The public is encouraged to tune in to the latest episodes of This Week in Government, which features two insightful interviews - one with the Privacy Commissioner Mr. Alexander White and the other with the Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, JP, MP.
The public will note that the Personal Information Protection Act or PIPA becomes effective January 1, 2025. And during a recent wide-ranging conversation the Privacy Commissioner talks about the Road to PIPA and the steps being taken to prepare Bermuda for the implementation of the legislation. Mr. White highlights the importance of what PIPA means for Bermuda, as well as how the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (PrivCom) is helping organisations prepare. The public will recall that the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Vance Campbell recently signed the PIPA Intent Statement, which committed the Government to being PIPA ready by January.
Separately, Minister Hayward’s This Week in Government interview focused on the recently released Position Paper on Retaining the Local Workforce.
In an expansive discussion, Minister Hayward spoke about the Government's approach to retaining the current workforce, as well as what’s being done to encourage Bermudians to return home.
The Minister has previously said, “Bermuda’s working population is made up of Bermudians and guest workers. Therefore, the demographic problem we face concerns both of these groups. Accordingly, the solutions proposed to mitigate the demographic cliff-edge that we face, targets both Bermudians and guest workers.
“As a government we want to see more opportunities for Bermudians; the chance to earn a living wage doing meaningful work; and the opportunity to enter the most sought-after industries, create new ones, be entrepreneurs and socially conscious contributors to our economy and society. We want Bermudian workers to have a real chance to thrive.”
