15 October, the Department of Statistics highlight the annual observance of Caribbean Statistics Day.
An aim of the initiative is to boost awareness of the Department, its role and the statistics available to the community. This year’s focus will be on the Labour Force Survey, as last year marked the first time such a survey was conducted twice (May and November).
The purpose of the survey is to provide data on the working population, unemployed and economically inactive population 16 years and older. A key indicator derived from the survey is the unemployment rate.
To highlight Caribbean Statistics Day, the Department has planned three awareness activities for tomorrow:
- The Director of Statistics, Melinda Williams, will speak about the importance of the Labour Force Survey on Inspire FM 105 (David Lopes show) at 7.15 am and the Sherri Simmons Show on Magic 102.7 at 12.00 pm.
- The Department will host an informational booth for the public from 12.00 pm – 2.00 pm in the lower level of the Washington Mall. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the different publications the department produces and take away data of interest.
- Schools will receive an activity booklet with relevant data and concepts sourced from the Labour Force Survey, Employment Survey and 2016 Census to broaden students’ statistical knowledge.
