The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advises the public that its Biannual Septage Disposal Operations are underway as of September 15, 2025. These operations may cause temporary unpleasant odours in residential areas surrounding the Marsh Folly Composting Facility.
The Tynes Bay Septage Receiving Facility collects septage from residential and commercial cesspits across the island. Septage settles in a holding pit, where waste solids accumulate over time. Every six months, these solids must be removed and transported to Marsh Folly for disposal, as required by the facility's operating license issued by the Environmental Authority.
While the odour may be noticeable, there is no risk to public health. All Ministry of Public Works and Environment waste facilities follow strict best-practice procedures and undergo annual inspections to ensure the safety of both residents and the environment.
The Ministry thanks the public for their understanding and cooperation as these necessary operations are conducted.
