2023 Environmental Statistics Compendium

Environmental Statistics Compendium

Today, the Ministry of Economy and Labour released the 2023 Environmental Statistics Compendium from the Department of Statistics.

The Compendium is structured into thirteen sections and contains brief analyses, tables, and graphs for each section. More than 40 statistical tables provide a wealth of data about Bermuda's environmental conditions. This publication is an excellent tool for research, school projects, and promoting awareness about issues affecting Bermuda's environment.

Some highlights for 2021 to 2022 include:

  • Hotels remained the most popular accommodation type as most air passengers (63.4%) stayed at hotels.

  • Total electricity consumption in 2022 grew to approximately 524.2 million kilowatt-hours from 522.6 million kilowatt-hours in 2021. The residential sector accounted for under half (45.5%) of all electricity consumed in 2022.

  • Although the Tuna and pelagic group remained the most popular catch at 168.0 metric tonnes, Groupers experienced the largest increase (28.3%) in fish landings from 2021 to 2022.

  • In 2022, the amount of waste totalled 71,200 metric tonnes, a decrease of 2.7 per cent over the 73,200 metric tonnes in 2021.

  • In 2022, Bermuda’s total volume of precipitation was 72.0 million cubic metres per year. This represents a 4.8 per cent decrease from the level received in 2021.
